Grand Canal

Updated: Feb 6, 2024

Grand Canal (大运河) is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site as the greatest masterpiece of hydraulic engineering in the history of mankind. It runs from the capital Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in the south. Constructed in sections from the 5th century BC onwards it enabled the supply of goods, the unified administration of the territory, and the transport of troops.

Some of the Hangzhou most beautiful museums are located around Grand Canal. You can find a list of museums here.

A lot has been written about Grand Canal, you can easily find a lot of information online, but if you would like to know how I experienced it, and what I liked about it, here you can read a chapter of my book.
